Working Principle of Gear Pump

The working principle of gear pump is relatively intuitive and efficient. It is a positive displacement pump designed and manufactured using the principle of gear meshing.

The following is a detailed explanation of its working principle:

1. Basic Structure

Gear pumps are mainly composed of two or three gears, pump casing, electric motor, and seals. Among them, two gears (the driving gear and the driven gear) are tightly matched inside the pump casing, forming a closed volume space.

2. Working Process

Inhalation stage: When the gear rotates under the drive of the motor, the meshing teeth on one side of the suction chamber gradually separate, causing the volume of the suction chamber to gradually increase, forming a local vacuum. At this time, the oil in the tank enters the suction chamber of the hydraulic pump through the suction pipe under the action of atmospheric pressure, filling the tooth groove space.

Transport stage: As the gear continues to rotate, the oil in the tooth groove space is carried to the oil chamber on the other side. During this process, the oil is gradually squeezed and transported along the inner wall of the pump casing.

Discharge stage: When the oil reaches the discharge chamber, the gear teeth on this side continuously mesh in sequence, gradually reducing the working volume. Due to the incompressibility of liquids, oil is constantly squeezed and output from the pressure chamber into the pressure pipeline.

3. Characteristics and Advantages

Simple and compact structure: The gear pump has a relatively simple structure, small volume, light weight, and is easy to install and maintain.

Capable of withstanding impact loads: Gear pumps can withstand certain impact loads and are suitable for various working conditions.

Strong self-priming force: Gear pumps have strong self-priming ability and can easily suck in oil.

Good craftsmanship and affordable price: The manufacturing process of gear pumps is mature and the cost is relatively low, so the price is relatively affordable.

4. Precautions

Gear pumps generate certain radial forces and flow pulsations during operation, which may lead to noise and vibration. Therefore, attention should be paid to its performance parameters and working environment when selecting and using it.

In order to ensure the normal operation and extend the service life of the gear pump, regular maintenance and upkeep are necessary, including checking the wear of seals, bearings, and shaft sleeves, as well as cleaning and replacing lubricating oil.

In summary, gear pumps achieve liquid suction, transportation, and discharge through the meshing and rotation of gears. Its working principle is simple and clear, with many advantages and characteristics, and it has been widely used in industrial production.
